Hurston in the spotlight

April 10, 2008

I was bitterly disappointed last night that I missed the American Masters series on WNET, which featured legendary African American writer Zora Neale Hurston.

Another Harlemite like Ralph Ellison, Hurston lived on 124th street for a short period. Her literary works, although only now being highly recognised, were way beyond their time in terms of how reflective and controversial her insights were on African American culture and living.

One of her well know works was ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’ – I certainly recommend reading it.

So basically you are disappointed to have missed a television program.

And that adds value to the world how exactly?

Why do you care what I do and more importantly what are you doing to make the world a better place since you seem to imply that you’re doing more than I am.

Anyway, it was a documentary that was of great interest to me, not just any old television programme, and the point is through this blog I’m exposing the names of great and influential writers to people who may not them.

I expect behaviour like yours – people who have nothing better to do but criticise others.
